Two UIW students were honored by the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists with scholarships during the annual SAAHJ gala on July 23. Danielle Reyna and Erica Mendez are working toward their bachelor’s degrees in communication arts and both plan to graduate in 2010.
Reyna writes about her accomplishment: “The scholarship was a tremendous honor. Through networking, I was able to learn about the scholarship that SAAHJ awards to students every year. Eight students are chosen as recipients in the area of visual arts, print and broadcast journalism.
“I’m a full-time student and work part time as well. I’m proud to say that I’m a part of the group that created UIWTV on-campus last semester. UIWTV is a student-run broadcasting station that provides quality news, sports and entertainment for the UIW community. I was hired this year as the first underwriting/ promotions manager for the station, and I also anchor and report for our broadcasts. I found myself overwhelmed trying to keep up with school and the station, all while trying to keep another part-time job. This scholarship has given me the financial opportunity to slow down at work and has given me more time to focus on my last year in school and my passion, working for UIWTV.
“This scholarship is important because it recognizes the accomplishments of Hispanic students in the community. It is positive reinforcement like this that motivates students to continue working hard because it doesn’t go unnoticed and it pays off. The goal of SAAHJ “is to help newsrooms and offices better reflect the diverse population of Texas.” This organization has given me the confidence and inspiration to continue following my dream and passion for journalism.”
