On April 8, the UIW community celebrated Incarnate Word Day with
its founding congregation, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.
The annual event was held in observance of the feast of the Annunciation
of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Incarnation of the Eternal Word, God.
The day’s festivities included a reception on Dubuis Lawn, the Parade
of Values: Golf Cart Parade, the Cardinal Carnival, and the presentation of the CCVI Spirit Awards during a Mass in Our Lady’s Chapel.
The 2013 faculty recipient of the CCVI Spirit Award was Dr. Mary Beth
Swofford, associate professor of English. The award recognizes a member of the faculty, administration or staff who has demonstrated in service to the university and/or to the broader civic community, the spirit of the founders, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.
The 2013 Student CCVI Spirit Award, presented to a student who is recognized by peers, faculty and staff as living the Mission of the Sisters, was presented to senior Caroline Garcia; it is the highest award a student can earn at UIW.
As part of the Incarnate Word Day events, Sr. Margaret Patrice Slattery, CCVI, president emerita, gave a presentation on the origins and history of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and Fr. John Markey, O.P., associate professor and director of the Ph.D. in spirituality program at Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, lectured on incarnational spirituality in the Mabee Library Auditorium.
