UIW has reached an important step in the development of the School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM). SOM received pre-accreditation with permission to recruit immediately and provisional accreditation status effective July 1, 2016, from the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).
This phase of accreditation is granted when a school demonstrates the ability to initiate instruction by a specified date. With regard to the SOM, that date is July 31, 2017. A school demonstrating consistency in meeting standards for each class of instruction being offered will continue to receive provisional accreditation. Provisional accreditation status is reviewed annually to assess the academic progress of the first, second and third year classes through graduation.
The SOM Office of Admissions began accepting student applications June 1, 2016, with plans for students to begin classes in Fall 2017. SOM anticipates an inaugural class of 150 students. For information, contact DOdoc@uiwtx.edu or visit www.uiw.edu/som
