UIW Welcomes New Trustees

The following individuals were recently appointed to serve on the University of the Incarnate Word Board of Trustees. As trustees, these individuals will be part of the policy-making body of the University that sets strategies and develops new visions for the University. They will serve a 3-year renewable term. (Not pictured below is Juaquin Angel Soliz, president of the Student Government Association, who will serve a one-year term.)

Roger Barnes (appointed June 15, 2001)

Dr. Roger Barnes was recently elected to serve a two-year term as the UIW Faculty Senate President. With this position also comes the opportunity to serve as a member of the UIW Board of Trustees.

Dr. Barnes has been with UIW for the last 13 years. He is a professor of sociology and former Chair of the Rank and Tenure Committee.

He earned his degrees at the University of Kansas including: B.A in Sociology, 1973; M.A. in Sociology, 1976; M. Phil. Sociology, 1978; and a Ph.D. in Sociology, 1983.

Past honors included being selected for the 1999 CCVI Spirit Award and in 1996 as the UIW Moody Professor. Both are very prestigious honors given by the university.

At UIW, he is involved with numerous committees and has served as a faculty advisor for the Alpha Chi Honor Society and Amnesty International.

Charles D. Lutz, III (appointed June 15, 2001)

Bank One Austin/San Antonio CEO Charlie Lutz has been a San Antonio banker for thirty years. Starting his banking career in 1971 at Bexar County National Bank, he ultimately held leadership positions with RepublicBank, NBC Bank and First City, Texas.

An Amarillo native, Lutz earned his bachelor’s Degree from Trinity University and is a graduate of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University.

Lutz currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and serves on the boards of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation, the Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health, VNA & Hospice of South Texas, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, the Texas Business and Education Coalition and the World Affairs Council.

An Elder at First Presbyterian Church, and member of the Downtown Rotary Club, Lutz serves on the Board of Governors of the YMCA of San Antonio and the Hill Country and chairs the Business School Advisory Council for the University of the Incarnate Word.

Marky Read Pontius (appointed June 15, 2001)

Marky Read Pontius is a proud alumna of Incarnate Word. She completed her graduate work at UIW and earned her bachelor's degree from the Newcomb College of Tulane University.

She has 20 years of experience in hotel sales and marketing and five years experience in real estate sales and marketing. She is employed by Guy Chipman Company and holds the position of Corporate Director of Marketing.

Currently, she serves on the St. Anthony of Padua Parish Finance Committee. In the past, she chaired the parish Pastoral Council, a post she held for five years. Pontius is fluent in French and occasionally travels to France to study the language.

David J. Cibrian (appointed March 9, 2001)

He earned an undergraduate degree in accounting from Loyola Marymount University in 1985. In 1990, he earned a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University. He is licensed to practice law in California and Texas and was formerly with the financial audit group of Ernst & Young-Los Angeles as a Certified Public Accountant.

Cibrian is board member of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation and a past board member of the Free Trade Alliance of San Antonio. Past honors include being named one of the city’s 40 "Rising Stars" under the age of 40 by the San Antonio Business Journal.

Berkley V. Dawson (appointed March 9, 2001)

Berkley V. Dawson serves as the current President of Budco of San Antonio. Within the industry, Dawson has operated Anheuser-Busch distributorships in Colorado Springs, Co. and in Amarillo, Texas. He currently owns and operates the distributorship serving San Antonio, Del Rio and Eagle Pass, which encompasses nine counties in Texas.

Dawson has served as a past Board of Directors member for Boys Town, the United Negro College Fund, and the Southwest Craft Center. He has also been involved in other local civil organizations such as United Way and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund of San Antonio. Over the past 10 years, he has managed to raise over $500,000 for this scholarship fund.

He is a recipient of the following honors: Dimensions of Excellence Awards from Anheuser-Busch, the 50% Market Share Award, Purveyor of the Year Award by the San Antonio Restaurant Association, and NSFRE - Outstanding Corporation.

He received an associate’s degree from Amarillo Junior College and in 1978 completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas.

Peggy Wolff Lewis (appointed March 9, 2001)

Peggy Wolff Lewis is a graduate of Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio and a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. Lewis is the wife of A.J. Lewis Jr., a retired attorney and UIW Emeriti Board Member.

She currently serves as a board member to the Jefferson State Bank, the Baptist Hospital Foundation and the St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation.

Lewis has been associated with many local civic organizations including: the San Antonio Junior League, the Harry Jersig Speech & Hearing Center, and the Healy-Murphy Center.

Her special interests include traveling, creative writing and interior design. With her talents, she founded the company Mi-Peg Interiors, which coordinated both residential and commercial design projects. Her daughter, Laurie Lewis Saunders, now owns the business.

Lewis is also affiliated with the Delta Delta Delta Sorority and was active in the Charity Ball Association and the San Antonio Symphony Board.

Mark E. Watson Jr. (appointed March 9, 2001)

Watson is heavily involved in national, state and local civic and social organizations. He currently serves as a Texas Parks & Wildlife commissioner, a position he was appointed to by then Gov. George W. Bush. He is also a representative for Texas Parks & Wildlife on the Coastal Coordination Council.

In 1989, he began his life-long dream of owning a ranch and now has managed to produce a premier wildlife habitat. In 1983, Watson founded Titan Holdings, Inc. and served as President and CEO of the national insurance company that was sold in 1997 to USF&G Insurance Company. Before his independent venture into the insurance market, he was a partner with his father’s insurance company.

This venture lasted 20 years in which he played an instrumental role in building the company into one of San Antonio’s largest locally owned agencies. In 1978, it was sold to a national firm. His past honors include being named the 1992 Wildlife Conservationist of the Year by Kendall County. In 1995, the ranch received runner-up Wildlife Stewardship Farm of the Year from Remington Progressive Farmer Rural Sportsman.
