He touched so many lives, and he will never be forgotten.
“Our Lord Jesus Christ suffering in the multitude … seeks relief at your hands.” This 1869 call of Bishop Claude Marie Dubuis still beckons us at the University of the Incarnate Word, an institution founded by the very Sisters who first responded to that challenge. Srs. Madeleine Chollet and Pierre Cinquin rooted their spirituality in the doctrine of the Incarnation and the radical implications of that doctrine: God had sent His Son among us to teach us that what we do for others, we do directly for God (Matthew 25:40). In that spirit, they lovingly cared for God’s people in hospitals, in homes for the young and aged, and in schools, including the College and Academy of the Incarnate Word.
The heart of UIW’s Mission lies in the statement: “The university is committed to educational excellence in a context of faith in Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word of God.” The university hopes to educate men and women who will be “concerned and enlightened” citizens; men and women who, in a spirit of faith, will make a real difference in their world. The responsibilities of global citizenship, of community service, and of promoting social justice are key components of UIW’s curriculum so that the Incarnate Word experience draws students into solidarity with the less fortunate and inspires them to find solutions to the pressing issues of this century, to offer relief to “Our Lord Jesus Christ suffering in the multitude …”
