
Donna Aronson, Dean of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences
was interviewed for a peer review article published in The Chronicle
of Higher Education on March 16. She was selected because she currently
serves as president of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education.
Dr. Roger C. Barnes, associate professor of Sociology, spoke
on March 2 in Corpus Christi on "The Death Penalty - A Faith
Perspective" to the Mission Presbytery, the Pastors of Texas'
Presbyterian churches.
He also has had his article, "Criminology and Criminal Justice:
The New Millennium," accepted for publication later this year
in the National Social Science Journal.
Dr. Randall Bowden, and Dr. Annette Craven, both
from the School of Business and Applied Arts and Sciences, recently
had a paper accepted at the 2001 Hawaii Conference on Business.
The paper was titled, "The 'Art' in the Art and Science of
Organizational Development." The conference was held from June
14-17 in Honolulu.
Dr. Bob Connelly, professor of Philosophy, had his article,
"Just-War Theory and the Role of the PoliceSniper," appear
in an issue of the International Journal of Applied Philosophy.
He also presented his paper, "Reconciling with Black America:
In Search of a Process of Closure," at the annual Conference
on Value Inquiry held in Tulsa.
Dr.
Pat LeMay Burr, Dean of International Programs and Initiatives,
was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for the academic year 2001-2002.
The award will allow her to lecture at Monterrey Tech-ITESM, in
Monterrey, Mexico, on issues related to international trade and
e-commerce. She will not move to Mexico, but rather will commute
during her teaching assignment.
Ray Cross, instructor in English and ESL, and Dr. Sally
Said, associate professor in Foreign Languages, presented their
paper "The War of Words: Rhetoric and the School of the Americas"
at the annual conference of the Southwest Council of Latin American
Studies (SCOLAS) in Santa Fe on March 24.
Joseph Devlin, the latest graduate of the Music Therapy
program has passed the Board Certification examination, which means
that 100% of the UIW Music Therapy graduates who have taken the
exam have become Board Certified Music Therapists.
Dr. Janice Dvorkin, assistant professor of Music Therapy,
was a co-author of the "Peer Supervision Groups" section
of a book entitled Supervision in Music Therapy The book was published
this spring.
Dr. Richard H. Fosberg, the Benson Chair of Banking and
Finance, published a paper entitled "CEO Replacement and Compensation
Around Dividend Omissions" in the journal Corporate Governance.
Corporate Governance is an international journal published in England
that deals with issues facing senior management and the board of
directors.
Valerie Greenberg, professor of Communication Arts, recently
traveled to New Zealand where she was an invited speaker at the
International Web Association for Learning and Technology. Her topic
was on Incarnate Word's laptop initiative program entitled: "Bridging
the Digital Divide with laptop computers."
Dr. Binbin Jiang, Director of the International Language
Institute, along with her colleagues in Texas and California, gave
a number of presentations at national and international conferences,
during the spring 2001semester. The conferences included: EFL/ESL
Teachers in ESL/EFL, April 2001 in Seattle, Wash.; and at the Teachers
of English to Speakers of Other Languages 35th Annual Convention,
Feb. 28 - March 3 in St. Louis, Mo.
Dr. David M. Jurenovich, Vice President for Administration,
was selected to receive the 2001 PROF (Professionals Reinforcing
our Faculty) award by the San Antonio Chapter of the American Advertising
Federation. The advertising community chose Dr. Jurenovich for his
commitment to education in advertising, marketing, public relations,
communications, and graphic arts.
Sr.
Martha Ann Kirk, professor of Religious Studies, was interviewed
by Candice Bergen, during her program, "Exhale," on the
Oxygen Cable Network seen in fifteen million households. The program
was about the book For The Love of God: The Faith and Future of
The American Nuns. Among other things the book describes Sr. Martha
Ann's teaching and arts ministry.
Sr. Martha Ann Kirk also presented "Emerging Peace Rituals
in this U.N. Decade for Education for Cultures of Non-Violence and
their Relationship to Feminist Rituals of the Last Decade."
She was also the convener of the "Feminist Studies in Liturgy"
seminar hosting the dialogue with Rosemary Radford Ruether at the
North American Academy of Liturgy in St. Louis.
Dr. Bob Lamb, associate professor of Business Law, was the
guest speaker for the Meals on Wheels Volunteer Recognition Luncheon
held on March 10. Dr. Lamb has recently become the Acting President
of the San Antonio, Christian Senior Services Board of Directors.
Christian Senior Services is the parent organization for San Antonio
Meals on Wheels, Grace Place Alzheimer's Centers and the Senior
Companion Program.
Dr. Christy MacKinnon, professor of Biology, recently gave
an invited seminar at Michigan State University's Division of Science
and Mathematics Education. Her presentation, "Problem Solving
in a University Genetics Course" was based on several years
experience at UIW in restructuring a traditional science course
into a learner-centered experience.
Dr. MacKinnon and Dr. Bonnie McCormick, assistant professor
of Biology, were awarded a grant from the Texas Higher Education
Coordinating Board, Eisenhower Higher Education Grants Program.
Their proposal "Genetic Analysis and Problem Solving Strategies,"
is in partnership with the San Antonio Urban Systemic Initiative.
The $75,000 grant award will support teacher participants enrolled
in the MA for Multidisciplinary Sciences graduate program for 2001-2002.
Marveen Mahon, director of Health Services, applied for
a grant from the Office of the Governor last fall and was one of
ten schools selected to participate. The grant is funded through
"Texas Standing Tall," which is a statewide prevention
coalition funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to reduce
underage drinking.
The program utilizes the UIW STARS Peer educators to implement
the project. The program takes an innovative approach to the problem
of underage/high risk drinking and related violence among Texas
high school and college athletes.
Margaret Mitchell, associate professor of Theatre Arts,
gave a presentation, entitled "Land Dreamings," a Multilingual
Performance Exploring Land, Colonization, and Cultural Identity
for the International Commission of the United States Institute
for Theatre Technology (USITT) National Conference in March.
Professor Mitchell also exhibited costume designs from Land Dreamings
and she is now a member of the United States Exhibition Prague Quadrennial
Committee. The Prague Quadrennial is the international competition
for theatre design and architecture.
Dr. Mary Ruth Moore, associate professor in the School of
Education, received the Higher Education Award at the Breakfast
of Children's Champion on April 4 hosted by the San Antonio Association
for the Education of Young Children (SAAEYC).
She was honored as a member in the area of early childhood education
and a SAAEYC member. She was selected for this honor because of
her supporting role in the "child's right to play" and
for funding and directing the Playwork Institute of the Americas.
Dr. Eduardo Paderon, UIW Provost, and Dr. Esmeralda de los
Santos, professor of Business, delivered a multi-media presentation
entitled, "The Texas Challenge: National Implications and Lessons
to Learn" at the American Association for Higher Education
meeting held in Washington, D. C. on March 28.
The multi-media presentation studied the demographic effects of
Texas minority population growth on the state's economic, political,
and educational systems and included the perspectives of 5 prominent
San Antonio educators, researchers, and businesspeople.
Dr. Cyndi Porter, director of Universe Online, and Mahmud
Yusuf, director of International Administration, recently traveled
to Pakistan to represent the University as part of a sister school
relationship signing with Greenwich University. While in the country,
Dr. Porter was invited to give presentations on Online Learning.
Dr. Moumin Quazi, professor of English, presented a paper,
"Hearing Voices in the Silence: An Approach to Teaching World
Literature," at the Conference of College Teachers of English
in Amarillo, Texas on March 3.
Dr. Yeidi M. Rivero, assistant professor of Communication
Arts, received word that her paper "Erasing Blackness: Media
Construction of 'Race' in Mi Familia, The First Puerto Rican Sitcom
with a Black Family," was selected as the Top Competitive Paper
in International Communication by the International Communication
Association. In May, she presented the paper at the annual conference
in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Hubert Robichaux, lecturer in Anthropology, presented
a paper entitled "The Rio Azul Texts: Revelations about an
ancient Mayan City" at the 66th Annual Meeting of the Society
for American Archaeology in New Orleans on April 21.
J. S. Schiavo, visiting assistant professor of Information
Systems, completed the last of a long series of exams to become
a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and Microsoft Certified
Profession with the Internet Specialty (MCP+i).
Dr. Jim Sorensen, assistant professor of Nursing, received
the Horizon Award from his alma mater, Nebraska Methodist College
on June 9. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to the
profession, dedication to health care and education, community service,
and professional standards.
Dr.
Richard S. Szecsy, P.E. was invited to be a guest lecturer for
Texas A&M Kingsville to deliver a lecture entitled, "Economic
Value of Strategic Partnerships in an International Setting."
Dr. Keith Tucker, director of Counseling, was invited to
speak at the International Conference on Physician's Assistants,
under MEDCOM at the Academy of Health and Sciences. His topic was
"Learner as Olympian." The conference was held on Feb.
5 at Fort Sam Houston.
