Paul Alexander, MA '98, knows high school football – firsthand as a high school star in Lockhart and as an Emmy-winning sports reporter. The familiar face of Fiesta Dodge commercials and former KSAT-TV sports anchor has penned his first book about small town high school football. Its title, Movin' the Chains , is apropos for a labor of love that took 10 years to complete. That Alexander, 48, was a star athlete at Lockhart High School, where he lettered as a receiver and defensive back from 1969 to 1971, or that he was a rising star at CBS in the ‘80s covering sports, doesn't have as much to do with his new book as one might think. “It's more a matter of me wanting to stretch out,” said Alexander, who is an instructor and football coach at St. Anthony Catholic High School. “After more than 20 years in TV sports, I was tired of dot-dot-dot sentences,” he said. Alexander's book is set in Gonzales, a small town not unlike his hometown “in size, scope and attitude.” After graduating from Southwest Texas State University in 1976, he worked at KTBC-TV in Austin, KOLD-TV in Tucson, Ariz., and at CBS-owned and operated KMOX-TV (now KMOV) in St. Louis from 1980-87. REAP works with schools, youth and others to bolster rural resources and adapt survival techniques learned in the US. They encourage sustainable approaches that do not damage the environment; they especially promote eco-tourism. The main office for her internship is in Ulan-Ude, which is the capital of Buraytia, a very western province/republic of Russia, south of Siberia near Lake Baikal. She is working with the YAC's, which are youth activity centers founded in rural schools in 1996. They are the centers for sustainable development of their villages. The villages are traditional Buryat communities, descendants of the Mongols and are now considered both an indigenous and marginalized ethnic community. Basically as a programs officer intern she is assisting in the establishment of several more YAC's in villages and help plan, evaluate, and implement the business/micro-enterprise proposals for making the schools self-sufficient. So she is traveling to the villages and dialoguing with the locals for business ideas, and then helping to found and implement the business which is finally approved by both REAP and the village councils. She then helps oversee the implementation. Her internship is a guaranteed 9-month position with the option to extend longer. It is paid for by a FRAEC grant. It covers her housing, groceries, travel, and health insurance, plus two hundred dollars extra a month. And just to give you an idea of how much that is: a one bedroom flat in Ulan-Ude is $150 a month.
