A Legacy of His Own

The University of the Incarnate Word has established a scholarship in honor of Richard McCracken, Dean of Alumni, in recognition of his many years of service and loyalty to the graduates of UIW.

The McCracken Alumni Referral Scholarship, which will also be known as the Legacy Scholarship, was established with the goal of recognizing UIW alumni as an effective vehicle in the recruitment of new students, while strengthening the connection of graduates to the university.

Alumni will be involved in identifying prospective students who will benefit from an Incarnate Word education and uphold the mission of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

“I am truly honored to have the Alumni Referral Scholarship bear my name,” said McCracken. “It is also both an honor and vote of confidence in our alumni who can certainly help us refine the university in the 21st century in keeping with the mission they know so well.”

Under the new scholarship, which was implemented in the fall of 2002, any graduate of UIW can nominate one prospective freshman or transfer student per year to receive a $1,000 voucher towards the cost of attendance in their first year, beginning in Fall 2003.
“I can’t think of a better way of honoring Dick for his selfless service to Incarnate Word, especially our graduates, than establishing this scholarship with his name," said Dr. Louis J. Agnese, President of Incarnate Word.

An UIW alumnus voices his enthusiasm for the new scholarship. “It’s truly rewarding to be able to single out prospective students and also be able to help them out somewhat financially with the voucher. It’s a great vote of confidence that the University has placed in its alumni,” said Steve Garcia, BA ’02.
